Assessing the New Generation
Teaching materials today have progressed far beyond being a simple textbook – students now expect action-packed animated cartoons, fun songs, interesting stories and exciting games! All these components not only serve to provide a stimulating and encouraging environment for students but also equip them with the skills they need to pass a variety of assessments that truly show what they know.
In this session we will look at why we need to assess students, and how the YLE tests can support young learners. Using examples from a range of activities from different Kid’s Box New Generation components we will discover just how many basic classroom activities are actually excellent exam preparation techniques. We will also discuss which general techniques are less effective for helping students in their exams and go through an essential list of do’s and don’ts for when it comes to assessing young learners!

We Need to Talk
Encouraging Communication in the Young Learner Classroom
Children love communicating, so it’s just a question of getting them to do it in English! Through practical examples and hands-on activities, we’ll look at how we can help young learners to improve both their engagement and their speaking skills to enable them to communicate more efficiently.
In this workshop we aim to cover the different areas of communication our students need to focus on: their listening, their speaking and how to successfully bring the two together. We will then look at how to effectively incorporate controlled speaking activities into our Young Learner lessons, in pairs, in small groups and as a whole class.
The workshop will draw upon material from the new Primary series Kid’s Box New Generation published by Cambridge University Press and Assessment.
講者簡介 Presenter Profile
Michael Tomlinson has been teaching English since 1989. He has worked in the UK, Turkey, Spain and Sweden, with students ranging from children to adults and from beginner to proficiency level. He is currently a teacher at Star English, Murcia. He has also led numerous teacher training talks and workshops in Europe, Central and South America and Asia. His publications include two seven level primary courses, Level Up and Kid’s Box, both co-authored with Caroline Nixon. Michael and Caroline have also written a three level pre-primary series for Cambridge, called Pippa and Pop.
